The Google Phone

Posted by Thomas Xavier Gilberto | Wednesday, October 31, 2007

This year has seen many companies making their foray into new markets and diversifying their operations. Apple was the first to lead the pack with the introduction of their I Phone. Microsoft followed suit by launching the windows zune. Now a major web company we are all very familiar with is making it plain that it does not want to be left behind. You may have heard rumors about the Google phone and you may also have seen different models of what the phone could possibly look like. This post is not to confirm these rumours but to look at the Google phone in detail. Basically if there ever comes to be anything known as the Google phone, that phone will have better Internet features than any blackberry on the market because this is exactly the reason why the idea of a Google phone sprung up in the first place. Google claims that users and partners have been demanding for more Google applications on mobile phones and the Google phone was chosen as the best way to oblige Google users. Recently Sony Ericcson entered a partnership with Google to make Google search the homepage on their latest brand of mobile phones so the Google phone is simply the latest move by Google to dominate the mobile industry in the same way it has dominated the web. The Google phone is also another avenue for Google to establish itself as a major force in advertising and take on major competitors like Microsoft. Reports also indicate that Google will generate its revenue from the advertisements that will be placed on the phone. It is uncertain if the Google phone will be a success but if what we have seen from similar ideas is anything to go by then it will certainly be a flop.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB.

Posted by Thomas Xavier Gilberto | Tuesday, October 30, 2007

The other day I was feeling really bored and so I decided to watch a movie. I was too tired to make my way to the cinema and while toying with the options available to me, an idea occurred to me. I knew that it was possible to download movies from the Internet but with the danger of a virus infection looming I immediately brushed that thought aside. I deduced that I could watch movies online but what I was not sure of was if I could watch new releases online as well. After thinking about it for a while I decided to give it a try and so I went to google and typed in the phrase "watch movies online." After a few seconds I hit JACKPOT. Ever since that day I have discovered many more websites where you can watch DVD quality movies, currently showing movies and even yet to be released movies online. I call this the online movie industry and I believe it is most likely the big boys in hollywood don't know about it yet. Most of these movies are hosted on third party sites such as google video, you tube, tudou, and megavideo under meaningless names so most of this sites only provide links to them, however ther are quite a few such as 66stage.com that host these movies directly on their sites. The most amazing feauture I noticed on most of this sites is that they exist as online communities or forums and they are growing very rapidly. For instance one of the sites watch-movies.net has an alexa ranking of 8959 which is very high. I wonder how long it will be for hollywood to start coming down on these sites or for them to be declared illegal but for now I am going to enjoy the moment while it lasts.

THE GOOGLE PAGE RANK MYSTERY

Posted by Thomas Xavier Gilberto | Sunday, October 28, 2007

Google's page rank update a few days back and the most recent one of yesterday shook the entire blogosphere. What most blogger realized was that sites that sold links were being penalized but what blogger did not know was that sites that did not sell links and had little or no page rank got a page rank increase yesterday. There have been numerous reports of sites that do not have back links but now have a page rank of 4. The question therefore is that: is Google rewarding sites that do not sell links and not using the formal procedure to determine page rank or has Google changed their page rank algorithm system? For now those questions remain unanswered but my guess is that we will unravel more details in this mystery by the next update.
